The Oscar nominee wrestles with an ill-fitting British accent playing a woman whose life crumbles after her husband leaves for another woman Annette Bening plays the gregarious and needy wife Grace in Hope Gap. Photograph: Robert Viglasky A s well-trodden as the subject might be, there remains something horribly compelling about watching the end of a marriage play out on screen, the uneasy little details of what happens when someone switches to I Don’t proving hard to resist. In Hope Gap, Oscar-nominated screenwriter William Nicholson’s second film as director, we’re given an all-too-familiar set-up (husband tells long-serving wife that he’s leaving her for a younger woman) and the stage is set for blistering quarrels, messy untangling and two awards-aiming performances. But despite the clear dramatic potential of the wounds of divorce, proved time and time again by films ranging from An Unmarried Woman to this Oscar season’s Marriage Story, Nicholson fails to give his film the specificity and emotional depth required to make it seem necessary. We’ve been here before and nothing in the film’s 100-minute length truly justifies why we’re back here again. In the coastal town of Seaford, Grace (Annette Bening) and Edward (Bill Nighy) share a modest life, a comfortably learned dynamic set firmly, perhaps boringly, in place after 33 years together. Grace is gregarious and needy, Edward reserved and serious, and while her desire for more affection and vocal reassurances might cause mild tension, her pleas have become part of the script they’re both used to playing out day after day, year after year. But when Edward urges their son Jamie (God’s Own Country’s Josh O’Connor) to return for the weekend, it soon becomes clear that something is brewing. Grace’s paranoia over Edward’s lack of eye contact and nervousness around her is suddenly, abruptly justified when he announces that he’s leaving her for another woman. While there’s a nervy propulsion behind these initial scenes, especially during Edward’s painful pre-dump prep, the breakup happens so soon into the film that we’re left scratching our heads over what’s to come next. It turns out the answer is largely nothing and in place of a plot, there’s a repetitive cycle of crying, beach-walking and moping that might have felt less plodding if we had more investment in the couple at its centre. Their relationship is painted with recognisably broad strokes (the nagging wife and repressed husband) and despite two inarguably accomplished actors, there’s a niggling disconnect. Nighy’s well-meaning, if unacceptably cowardly, husband is played with an affecting subtlety but a miscast Bening struggles to match him. She’s hampered with an ill-fitting British accent she’s never truly comfortable with and so much of her performance is muddied by her struggle to sound believable as a Brit that little room is left for her to seem believable as a person. It’s ultimately as awkward for her as it is for us. There are glimmers of insight along the way, particularly in how Grace compares a divorce to a murder and how spurned women are devalued in comparison with widows, but it’s mostly surface. Introducing their son as a key component is an interesting move but it’s never one that really pays off and Nicholson’s attempts to capture twentysomething life border on embarrassing. There’s the odd excursion into the city and a handful of supporting characters but it’s mostly a three-hander in a limited number of locations. Aware of how stagey this might seem, Nicholson and cinematographer Anna Valdez-Hanks do offer up some stunning coastal vistas but matched with a swelling score, we’re left craving a narrative of equal weight and as devastating as Grace’s predicament is, the pathos never comes. Divorce is painful but Hope Gap isn’t damn near painful enough. Hope Gap is showing at the Toronto film festival.

In “Hope Gap, ” Annette Bening plays a fiercely intelligent but not nearly independent enough English housewife who has been toiling away on a project for years. A lover of literature, and poetry in particular, Bening’s character Grace is compiling a book of verses for the full range of human experience. She intends to call it “I Have Been Here Before, ” and it will serve as a kind of life preserver for the dejected and depressed, reminding that no one is experiencing hardship for the first time, and that others more eloquent have managed to put those feelings to paper, signaling the way through for all who follow. Writer-director William Nicholson intends “Hope Gap” to work in much the same way. Slow and stuffy, like a filmed play, but also considerably more nuanced and mature than your typical relationship drama, it’s the story of a marriage that ended almost entirely out of the blue after the couple had been together for 29 years. Except the split wasn’t unexpected; it had been telegraphed in tiny ways almost every day for decades, until at last, it came to a head, and the husband (played by Bill Nighy) left, enlisting his son (Josh O’Connor) to help Grace cope with the separation. It’s a difficult prospect, inspired by the divorce of Nicholson’s own parents, and the filmmaker navigates it as sensitively as possible in order to be fair to both parties. In the process, his characters’ pain, and also their resilience, serve to let others know they’re not alone. That’s a noble aim, I suppose, but a rather dreary one for audiences seeking escapism, rather than a suicide hotline — which, incidentally, is where Grace volunteers to work, channeling her newfound cynicism into a kind of surly commiseration with those worse off than she feels. Woe is the soul who suggests “Hope Gap” as a date night. A film like this is better watched at home, curled up beneath the quilt with a pint of Cherry Garcia and a box of Kleenex. More than just the metaphorical discrepancy between Grace’s expectations and the reality of her marriage, “Hope Gap” is an actual place, a scenic stretch of cliffs in Sussex, facing south toward France. It’s a perfectly lovely spot to throw oneself into the ocean — and don’t think that hasn’t occurred to Grace, although she’s none too keen about scraping her face across the white chalk limestone on the way down. Grace and her husband have shared a house not far from the cliffs for decades, firmly entrenched in their routines. Grace never finishes her tea. Edward comes home, makes a cup for himself and retreats to his desk on the other side of the house. Edward is a history professor who spends his evenings “wikiing” (correcting articles on Wikipedia), which inspires one of Nicholson’s many fuddy-duddy riffs on how modern society seems out of sync with his obsolete characters: “If you make a history mistake in a Wiki article, you click undo and revert it. ” (There’s an even more groan-worthy one later, about paying with a chip-equipped credit card: “It’s all contactless now. ”) Nicholson is a gifted writer with an impressive list of credits that includes “Unbroken, ” “Gladiator” and “Les Misérables” (nearly all of which were co-written, which makes his contributions a bit tricky to parse, although more can be told from his C. S. Lewis biopic, “Shadowlands, ” based on his own play). He gives in a bit too easily to showing his wit, which is backed by a kind of earnestness that can be uncomfortable to watch — at least to the extent that “Hope Gap” is personal, a reflection of what his parents went through. Grace adopts a dog and names it after her husband. A detail like that would be corny if someone had made it up, but here it’s just heartbreaking. In the weeks to follow, whenever their grown son Jamie comes home, he finds her sitting on the hall stairs, as if waiting for Edward to return. Again, brutal. He doesn’t let his father off easy (Edward waits until he falls for someone else — the mother of one of his pupils — before finding the courage to leave), nor does he begrudge the man his newfound bliss. When Grace confronts the other woman, the stranger matter-of-factly replies, “I think I thought there were three unhappy people, and now there’s only one. ” The final dagger. What has Jamie lost, raised in a household without real love between his parents? They felt it once, maybe — although a story about how they met (on the wrong train) suggests their son is the only good thing to come of the marriage. And even he seems stunted in matters of romance and home-building, judging by his life back in London. How much of himself has Nicholson put into Jamie? “I never asked myself if she was happy or what she was thinking, ” the young man shares early on — although casting Bening, who seems to have looped her English-accented lines, as his mother seems like the highest compliment, and the actress is excellent in all her bedraggled desperation. In any case, it seems like Edward was equally uncurious about a wife he took for granted, a wife who gets on his nerves. “You go for him, ” Jamie reproaches her. “He should fight back, ” she says. “I want a reaction. ” What she wants is reassurance. Something has been not right about their marriage for ages, and Edward is too mild-mannered to address it. We’re used to seeing Nighy play salty, extroverted characters, garrulous and good-natured, but Edward is like an old ficus, bent over by years of badgering. The more Grace picks at him, the more he retreats … until such time that he has backed himself out of the marriage entirely. Grace wants them to stay together, but it’s clear that neither Jamie nor Nicholson shares that view. The marriage has run its course. It happens. And where do people turn when it does? Well, now they’ll have “Hope Gap” to cling to — proof that someone has been here before. Thank you William Nicholson for saving my Dinard Film Festival 2019. After viewing several so un-innovative "real stories" Red Joan, Fisherman's Friends) and "social realism" films (The Last Tree, VS - even though VS's world of rap battles was fascinating) I was getting really disappointed in British cinema.
Hope Gap made up for all that. It is beautifully acted (Annette Bening is extraordinary) deep and subtle, and does carry you away.

I AM GROOT. Loved this movie so much! Still surprised how much I loved it. Will buy the DVD and that's saying a lot, because I don't even buy DVDs 😂 The words that comes to mind is how beautiful this movie is. So as the school holidays comes to an end in Australia we finish off with yet another release of a children's film. The funny part is that it's a bit like a recipe, as it contains parts of all the other films I've reviewed already these summer holidays! You take the machismo of Playing with Fire, add the silliness of Farmageddon, plus a touch of heart from Frozen 2, not forgetting some funny one-liners from Jumanji, finish it off with some espionage from Spies in Disguise, garnish it with the child-friendly action of Star Wars and you have a perfectly satisfying film called My Spy. Mr. 9 and I ate it up (and reviewed it) last week when we saw it at Palace Nova cinemas!
JJ (Dave Bautista) is an undercover CIA agent who is not exactly inconspicuous. After a weapons deal goes horribly wrong he is assigned to surveillance duty with tech-specialist Bobbi (Kristen Schaal. Their job is to keep an eye on a mother and daughter who may be in danger if a global terrorist finds out where they live. But JJ isn't exactly qualified for surveillance duty and it's not long before he is caught out by clever 9 year old Sophie (Chloe Coleman) the girl he is supposed to be watching. The two work out an arrangement where Sophie won't tell her mum Kate (Parisa Fitz-Henley) that they are being watched, but only if JJ teaches Sophie how to become a spy. The two don't exactly get along but over time a friendship develops, much to the chagrin of Bobbi who knows that this is a serious breach of the CIA surveillance rules. But, as expected, trouble inevitably finds its way into Sophie and Kate's life and we are left to see whether the spy training that JJ gave this precocious 9 year old will succeed or fail spectacularly.
THE GOOD
For a film like this, with a storyline that has been done to death plenty of times before, I was actually surprised at how much I liked My Spy. But my enjoyment didn't come so much from former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Stuber) but the confidence and acting ability of kid actor Chloe Coleman (Big Little Lies. In a lot of these 'kids teaching adults to be kids' films the child usually comes across as bratty and unlikeable but Coleman finds a great balance of clever, likeable and entertaining which Mr. 9 and I really found appealing. Also when you have a great comedy support cast like Kristen Schaal (Gravity Falls, Toy Story 4) and Ken Jeong (The Hangover movies) the laughter also lifts a notch too.
Mr.9: I really liked Sophie in this film when she is learning to become a spy. The part where she keeps looking at the explosions behind her was really funny because JJ had to keep turning her head around.
THE BAD
Bautista seems to have found his niche in Hollywood at taking characters who are large, muscle-bound, meat heads with not much going on upstairs. Alongside professional comedians like Schaal and Jeong his comedic acting can sometimes be painful to watch as he tries to compete with them for laughs but comes across more forced than natural.
And for those of you looking for an action film this is not entirely the case with My Spy. Although it is bookended with big, action, set pieces it is more a romantic comedy as much of the film is taken up with telling the story of JJ's budding friendship with Sophie and finding a possible love interest with her mum, Kate.
Mr. 9: It got really boring in the middle because there was no action happening. The bad guy was there at the start and then disappeared until the end of the film. It seemed different from what the trailer showed.
THE UGLY
For those of you who are familiar with Dave Bautista you would know that he is bald up top. Yet for some unknown reason the hair and makeup team decided to either spray paint or put a toupee on top of his head which is jet black and extremely short. It looks so unnatural and left me staring at the top of his head for most of the movie. Somewhat in shock and somewhat in fascination I couldn't stop looking at this unusual follicle choice.
I didn't have high hopes for My Spy after seeing the trailer but walked out pleasantly surprised at how a completely unoriginal film could be so enjoyable. Bautista's charm and Coleman's likeability really carry this film above 'just another comedy. An enjoyable film to finish off the school holidays!
THREE AND A HALF TOUPEES OUT OF FIVE
Mr. 9: All the spy stuff was fun and the movie was also pretty funny although it had a lot of swearing for a 'PG' film. Three and a half out five.

Which may leave some readers to suspect there is an element of sadness as well as happiness in the grandmothers tone. It may also be a case that Bond is exploring the theme of identity. Though the narrator knows that the girl in the photograph is his grandmother. She never confirms it. As to why she doesnt tell the narrator is difficult to say. When an individual is independent of others it is better to allow them to continue their independence without having them relying on others. There is also a sense that the grandmother when she was younger was the equal of the other children she played with, particularly the boys. This may be significant as it suggests that the narrator was able to stand on her own two feet. To be the equal of others through her confidence. As to whether this confidence remained with the grandmother is also difficult to say as Bond does not really give the reader any insight into the grandmothers present day activities. In it, she is seen surreptitiously holding hands with his brother-in-law, Nick. This starts him out on a journey to discover what was going on, and more Thank you, thank you, Penelope Lively. In the process, we meet Nick, a perpetual boy living off his successful landscape designer wife, Elaine. Theres Glyn, the husband; Elaine, the sister; Polly, the niece; Nick, the brother-in-law; Oliver, the photographer; Mary Packard, the elusive friend that we dont know much about until near the end; and a sundry of peripheral people in Kaths life. For much of the novel we are left to speculate as to how Kath dies, but if one reads closely, it is very apparent that she commits suicide (ten years into her marriage. Glyn finds a photograph years after her death of her discreetly holding hands with Nick, her brother-in-law. A note is with it from Nick making her aware of it & asking her to destroy it which she does not. Glyn is in a quandary over this turn of events & being the historical researcher he is, pursues for more information with an obsession. Did Nick & Kath have an affair? How long did it last? Were there others? As Glyn attempts to find answers he stirs up a real can of worms because he confronts all involved (those who knew or didnt know anything about the photograph. Elaine kicks Nick out—he is so dependent on Elaine financially and otherwise that he moves in with his daughter, Polly, which totally disrupts her life. Elaine will not discuss the matter with Polly or Nick. The last person that Glyn finally finds to talk to toward the end of the novel after coming to many dead ends in his pursuit for more information, is Mary Packard, who seems to have been Kaths one & only true friend. Glyn, Elaine & Oliver wind up having a lengthy conversation with Mary learning who the real Kath was. Each of them had been going about their lives & to Kath seemingly constantly inadvertently putting her real needs aside. Keep in mind Kath was a beautiful woman with few aspirations other than to be needed and loved, but no one seemed to realize this. Everyone knew she was beautiful, but didnt try to see the person underneath the beauty. For me this novel emphasizes the importance of “listening” to our loved ones and our friends and expressing our love not just assuming, “oh they know. ” Polly in describing one of her days seems to summarize in a nutshell how many of his go about our lives breezing through our work, exact, but not exactly enough & socializing usefully with our colleagues. This book prompts one to take a look around at the people we know, perhaps the people weve dismissed from our lives that we saw as beautiful, self-centered or callous. Do we really see people we know inside? Do we listen? Do we know each others “real needs? ” If we have something “niggling” at the back of our brain, do we stop to ask ourselves, “are we listening, ” what is our subconscious telling us to pay attention to? Can we change our impact on someones life? The novel takes us through what many might think superfluous information, but at the end one should see that this exploration into the characters everyday lives & their interactions (or lack thereof) with Kath were necessary to see the whole picture & understand the purpose of the book. When thinking about what happened to Kath, Oliver says it so well, “He saw—dimly, inexplicably—that in some disturbing way what had happened was heralded, that there had always been something troubled about Kath, something that set her apart. Behind and beyond her looks, her manner, there had been some dark malaise. But nobody ever saw it, back then, he thought. All you saw was her face. ” Oliver mentions the Latin phrase, “lacrimae rum, ” in the last pages which he considered untranslatable. When I looked it up, there were a few translations, but the one that touched me was by Robert Fagles, “The world is a world of tears, and the burdens of mortality touch the heart. ” Robert Fitzgerald translates it as "They weep here / For how the world goes, and our life that passes Touches their hearts. In the end, all those touched by Kath change in their thoughts & perceptions. Glyn Peters, a sixtyish British archaeologist, comes upon a group photograph that includes his late wife, Kath. Details in the photo, and a brief note that he finds with it, suggest that there are aspects of Kath's married life that he didn't know. So, researcher that he is, he makes some enquiries. Consequences ripple outwards from there, affecting a tight group of people who had been connected with Kath. These include: Elaine, her older sister, a successful garden designer; Elaine's husband, Nick, a former publisher, now full of plans that seldom come to fruition; Oliver, Nick's former business partner, now running a desk-top publishing business of his own; and Nick and Elaine's daughter Polly, who had been very close to Kath growing up and is now a web designer. All of them remember Kath as a force of nature, stunningly beautiful, a magnetic presence in any room. Although there is little present-day action in the novel, Kath is very much alive in the memories of those who were close to her. Her incandescence comes through from the very beginning, but as we move through the heart of the novel into its poignant conclusion, we begin to glimpse the real woman behind the brilliant glow, and each of the characters finds something different in the Kath whom they thought they knew. Consider again the various professions: archaeologist, landscape architect, publisher, web designer. As always with Lively, it seems, these are typical concerns for people of this class at this time. But there is more; they are all about manipulating and arranging given data to make a certain pleasing sense. Glyn's speciality is the history of landscape, reconstructing a lost way of life from the line of a hedge or the shape of a field; he is used to the way new discoveries can change old perceptions, and he approaches the study of his late wife in the same way. As a garden designer, Elaine also works with the natural features of a landscape, but builds on them, forming them into a new pattern to fulfill an aesthetic concept; this turns out to have been an acute analogy to her relationship with her younger sister. The other characters, as publishers or designers, are concerned with putting out words or pictures that will attract the eye, make apparent sense, and sell to the public. Lively seems to suggest that we treat our memories in much this way; by trying to wrestle them into patterns, putting them between glossy covers as it were, we may distort the natural shapes that point to more subtle meanings. There is one other significant character in that photograph, Kath's friend Mary Packard. Mary is a potter, a profession that also involves the shaping of raw material into pleasing forms, but in a more basic and instinctive way. The raw material is not landscape but the dirt of which it is made, and the pot grows like a living thing in the potter's hands. It is not surprising that Mary understands things about Kath that even her family has missed. It is her appearance at the end of the story and her ability to listen (for all the others are talkers) that provides the final clues that make us see Kath in a new and gentler light. Writing this review, I had the feeling of some other author hovering over Penelope Lively's novel. I now realize who it is: the Virginia Woolf of To the Lighthouse. Of course The Photograph is by no means as difficult a book to get through, and it breaks little new formal ground. But it is similarly constructed out of a series of interior monologues, unbidden thoughts, and chance reflections. It is written with the assumption that the inner world is every bit as important as the outer one, only richer and more revealing. And I am so glad that one of my goodreads friends recently discovered her with this book and gave it a great review - this prompted my request from my library. Ms. Lively was 70 when this book was first published and she has a lengthy award winning list of previous books before that. I look forward to reading more by this master. Her sister was cold, her husband was distant and she could never have children. She desperately sought someone to love her, but never could. Elaine (Kaths sister) Distant, efficient, perfectionist. She was never a doting, adoring older sister. She keeps Kath at arm's length. Part of the problem was that Elaine was never affectionate and one of those people who has problems verbalizing love. She is also naturally impatient with others. Nick (Elaines husband and Kaths ex-lover) A manchild who never grew up—and never had to, since Elaine always took care of him. He is unfocused and keeps dashing off to start things he never has the patience to finish. Hes a dreamer and is incredibly lucky to have such a practical wife, otherwise he would be starving. The Photograph is, first and foremost, a character study. The protagonist, a beautiful, whimsical creature with the unfortunate name of Kath, is dead. Many years after her death, her husband, Glyn, This is a book you will either love or hate. The story revolves around Glyn's obsession with finding out who Kath's lovers have been, but, curiously, not why she has been unfaithful, or even why she died. The fact that nobody among Kath's friends ever contemplated the reasons behind Kath's tragic death is really the point of the book. The people surrounding Kath were too self-absorbed to notice anyone but themselves, and Lively captures the full extent of their blindness with stunning accuracy. Lively's prose is absolutely exquisite. Every word is placed with the skill of a fine craftsman. For this reason alone, I enjoyed reading The Photograph. I did find it a stretch that such a self-absorbed man as Glyn could have managed so keen an obsession, especially in his later years. And, ultimately, the reasons for Kath's death did not ring entirely true. But in spite of these flaws, The Photograph was still a very good read. I rambled through the early chapters rather impatiently, enjoying the writing but not really interested, until the characters started to react to the main event- the finding of an old photograph that pictures the now-dead Kath, a married woman at the time, having a mildly intimate moment with her own brother-in-law. The various friends and relatives become aware of this and react as people will, with a variety of painful or evasive maneuvers. Kath was the beauty of this group of friends and was always expected to marry well and be happy. Is it a surprise that all may not be as it seemed? The central chapters of the book are very entertaining, as each character deals with the discovery in various ways. The handling of the story is witty, with wry observations of the character and personality of each person involved. To discover that there is no great truth revealed here that hasn't already been revealed a thousand times elsewhere is a disappointment, although the story is still interesting, told as it is about each character in turn as they react to the photo's import (or remember their part in it. The people are like us, self-absorbed, a little mean, indignant, whiny and in one case, wise. I would recommend it to most people I know, but can't shake a feeling that that there should have been more there. It's hard to read over and over that humans are very unattractive creatures... Lively's prose in this novel is of her usual brilliance and as the plot goes on the reader follows the husband, Glyn, in his search for the truth. The reader also learns about Kath's relationships with her sister, her brother-in-law, their daughter, Polly, and her friends. Although we know that Kath has died, nothing about her death is revealed until near the end of the book, and I, for one, was not surprised when how she died is revealed. I'd recommend this book to readers who enjoy Lively's characterizations, her ability to conceal the facts and allow readers to discover them as they read through the novel. You never hear from the woman herself; she only appears in memories of those who knew her. By the end, each memory has captured her so expertly you feel as if she spoke, as if she told you hersef her innermost thoughts and dreams. She appears more real and fully fleshed than those who evoke her. I sat back amazed at the skillful writing and plotting. How did the author take me from not liking her much to feeling like A subtle and intricately layered examination of the mystery of one woman's life. How did the author take me from not liking her much to feeling like I understood her? Lively didn't use the artifice of flashbacks. She weaves each memory in the story as it would occur to one of us- a certain smell or object brings someone to mind, all while the plot moves briskly along. How did she ensure each snippet would add up to a whole? How can these bits of memories give us enough of a back history, motivation, and life purpose for this character? It almost read like a wonderful stage play would feel as you sat in the theater. I will read this again just to observe and admire the writer's craft... Nothing unusual about the photo until he examines it closer and sees that she's holding hands with her sister's husband. The mystery of this photograph and the emotions it brings forth causes him to investigate further - leading him to his final discovery and the mystery surrounding her death.
